You really need to use compression on a track. If you want to make your kick more prominent - compression on that - or onthe drum tracks as a group. I struggle with compression. best to look for methods of compression on a particular sound and apply it to the sound to se how it works. ideally if you have compressed a sound successfuly you should be able to have the volume of that track lower than before but the sound should cut through. There is an alternative to standard compression that I use as I find it easier - but I've forgotton what the plug in is called. Anyhow chorus, delays and layering different takes with 'fatten' a sound'. Compression really just compresses par of a sounds dynamic range I think..try layering different snare sounds for a fatter snare or adding chorus / mod delays to parts to beef them up.
Not sure if folks compress whole tacks after this at mixdown though...I've not tried that.
