91-93 old skool hardcore is where it's at for me. Live sets, with an MC who doesn't say too much or put on silly accents.

A good DJ is much more than a record player, tbf! 
I do like a decent MC who doesn't make too much noise & (as I said) doesn't do a silly accent (usually wannabe gangster Jamaican).
MCs can ruin a great set, but they can also add to the atmosphere of a decent set if they go about it the right way.
