I bought a ION VHS2AVI machine a few years back, it works dirt simple.
Step 1: connect to computer
Step 2: Put in VHS
Step 3: Record AVI
I think you can buy the ION media connector from their website for about $50 nowadays, might be worth the investment if you have lots of VHS you want to save.
