Thanks for the advice - I tried compressing a mastered track and it sounded awful but clearly I wasn't supposed to be doing that. One track at a time...thanks for the tips!

not to contradict everyone else but i just compress at the end as part of the mastering to pump the whole track. i may add some to the vox to tighten them a little and even the sound, but too much and it sounds weird. if i was using a real drum kit defo add some to the kick and snare but cos i'm just using samples, i figure they've already gone through the compression mill at least once.

I can't say that I do anything much regarding compression or whatever myself, I just export it into a wav file but I think Ableton does automatically do some sorting out of levels. The results sound OK to me anyway.

Hi, ok RE compression on individual tracks - the method I try now and again is 'transient shaping'. Some folks say it's a bit of a blunt instrument as opposed to compression tools if you use if for 'compression'. However if, like me, you find compression tools a bit baffling this is a simpler method of altering the shape of a sound - and you can hear the difference so know you are actually doing something. I've used it on kicks and snares to good effect. A few free plug ins here - I use the Dominion one -
