Posted: Sat Dec 22, 2012 5:49 pmIt had been a long time since I had seen The Wonder Stuff and Pop Will Eat Itself on the same bill, so I was very excited about tonight. I arrived in time for some of Jesus Jones who were quite good actually.

Things were looking promising for Pop Will Eat Itself. It was busy, and there were a lot of Poppies t-shirts around. I met up with BK1970 - Ben and we headed off to the front with his lad once that man who isn't Jimmy Swaggart began his sermon - Music, ladies and gentlemen...

They played some nice songs - Back to Business into Preaching to the Perverted (I was amused hearing someone in the crowd saying after the gig that they liked that Back to Basics one), and then Dance of the Mad, one of my favourites of the night.

There was lots of running around on stage and a funny moment when Graham fell over in You've Been Framed style. Mary was very good - and there was a very nice atmosphere on stage with the band. I think they look and sound really tight - the sound is loads heavier nowadays, and the man who is the drummer is so incredible.

I used to (dare I admit it?) find Their Law a low point of the set, even with MK1 PWEI and VIle Evils, but with the new Pop Will Eat Itself, it sounds really good, and so much better than it used to. I looked up to see Miles from The Wonder Stuff up on the balcony - he would have been very concerned about following the Poppies - so much in fact that he actually said as much during his set. Although no Can U Dig it? there was Def Con One, which I loved. As did thousands of other aging exgrebos.

I first saw The Wonder Stuff in 1989, my second gig a couple of months after my first (PWEI) and this was the first time without Malc, who walked a year or so ago. It sounds silly, but I missed him - his sometimes out of tune backing vocals are the bits that I often find myself singing along to at the gig. Still, they played some good tunes - plenty of old school ones - A WIsh Away, GIve GIve Give and Ten Trenches Deep, and a faintly bizarre cover of Duran Duran's Planet Earth, something that shouldn't have worked, but did, a lot to my ears anyway. I spent some time talking with Sal - the guy who features in some of Adam's wonderful stories who was the sound engineer. He is such a nice man, and he thought that Pop Will Eat Itself were really, really good tonight - high praise from someone who has probably seen them more than anyone else outside of the band. He also mentioned that there was a small chance that Clint may be going along to watch tonight. I also heard Rich and Adam will be there. I wish I was - you lucky, lucky people..
