I was walking down the street and found a copy of the promo on a park bench, no lie. I've listened to it only once; so far I have mixed feelings. Generally the sound stays the course, which is making it hard for me to separate what I've just heard. That being said, most of these tracks are from the VE album and are easy to point out.
Thus far the only track that really sticks out for me is "Disguise", which has an awesome Fields Of The Nephilim/Sisters Of Mercy sound to it. The dual versions of "Wasted" are a great way to close the album, especially the reprise version. It reminds me much of the Golden Claws Musics that I've heard; drony, ambient, spacey... Good stuff. I'm still not %100 sold on "Chaos & Mayhem" as a debut single, but it's catchy sound is growing on me. “Mask” is a bit of a wash, but “Nosebleeder Turbo TV” sounds amazing with this re-recording. I like parts of “Captain Plastic” at the moment, and I have a feeling this song will grow on me quickly as well. I don’t think there is much to say about “Back 2 Business”, I clearly understand it was trying to fit in line with the intros to Box Frenzy, This Is This…, Cure For Sanity, & The Look Or The Life Style. But, unlike those albums this one comes a decade too late and the assault of TV/Movie samples or record stabs are a dead art do to copyright enforcement.
Also, the album is SHORT. Really short. As in that last sentence, short. You really tear through the 42minute run time quickly, so I'm hoping this leaves room for an expanded edition in the future. Although, let's be honest, CD space is a mute point in the era of digital downloads and 2,3,4 disc special editions. Speaking of space, this album doesn't really leave a lot of room to breathe. There is definitely a "wall of sound" production ethic being liberally used, which is the most distinct difference for me. No short choppy guitars, no squeals or pitch harmonics, no really memorable riffs. Instead the album relies heavy on a diffused mix which works well on some tracks, but blurs the album as a whole. I find it practically difficult to distinguish the dual vocal duties of Graham & Mary, though if I was to reminisce about the first few albums I probably would have just as many issues.
Overall it is a throwback to the “Cure For Sanity” or “Looks Or The Life Style” era of the Poppies. If I was to rank it, I would give it a 7/10.
