The only explicit statement I could see from Clint was on Twitter a few months ago, when he was directly asked if he was at the PWEI shows scheduled for July that were cancelled and his response was that he wasn't going to be there. Fuzz did wish the band well just before the new shows. Not seen anything from Richard or Adam, nor any statement from any of them that says the new lineup has their blessing or permission. If someone said honestly "Everyone's cool with the new lineup calling itself PWEI, good luck, god bless" then that's all I need to hear to shut up about it. I've not seen that, and I've been paying a metric shedload of attention.
The flow of information has not been clear ever since the Vile Evils album was announced. That album was announced then quietly quashed.
PWEI dates in the US (with no lineup info) was announced for September 2010, then cancelled, then UK dates for July 2011 (with no lineup info) then cancelled, then Beautiful Days (with no lineup info for sometime after tickets were on sale) and then eventually stuff actually happened with the August 2011 shows. Is it much wonder that the whole thing doesn't inspire a huge amount of confidence and can be seen - with the lack of clear information - as a bit suspect?
It's the use of another bands name that I don't like in these circumstances. The way I see it now is that it's not Pop Will Eat Itself, but another band by a former member of PWEI, doing a whole bunch of old songs as well as new ones using another bands name. That opinion's not going to change and calling me or anyone else names isn't going to get me or anyone else to change their minds. Someone who has seen them a lot more than me who saw the dates in August called the new lineup "A very good covers band that will be struggling to do a second tour". I hope they are wrong.
There's a plus side to all this : The new songs are very very good, the albums a fine piece of work (though some of my friends think it is absolute dogshit, I don't) and the band themselves seem to gamely giving it their best shot. I wish them the best of luck. On the strength of the album, there's plenty of fire still in the tank. Name of the band aside, there is plenty of good stuff going on in the world of PWEI at the moment.
I'm not trying to bait people - I have better things to do than troll on a forum just to get attention. I have what appears to be a dissenting opinion, and not afraid to voice it. If it's all a PWEI-love-in, where whatever happens, it's lavished with unthinking praise, I want no part of that : if you can't sort the wheat from the chaff, its all chaff.
and to PWEI, good luck guys - I hope you do brilliantly.
