"I AM THE NEPHILIM!"
But are you really? The PWEI core of Gra, Clint, Rich and Adam performed 1985-2005 (with G missing two tours in 1995-6 and Fuzz joining in 1992). That's the band. Pop WIll Eat Itself. That's who people will be expecting in October. That's not what they are going to get. It's going to hurt the band, and the name, and people who are expecting a certain lineup will be disappointed. People expecting certain songs will be disappointed. The singer, the guitarist, the drummer, the bass player are not going to be there. Previous bands that have seen major lineup changes did so a little earlier than year 25 in their career : The Nephilim split after 5 years, the original lineup of The Cure changed beyond all recognition in their 7th year, The Mission again changed radically in their 6th year, the Sisters changed their lineup every time they left the house. PWEI were a different band : one that used to stand for something, but apparently it is anally retentive to expect the line up of PWEI to be more than just "The Singer Who Quit In 1995 And Some Other Blokes".
Beyond all that, its the way this has been handled. There has not been clear information as to what gigs were happening when. Gigs went on sale, then were cancelled, then were never actually on sale at all. Lineups were guessed, then it went silent. Nobody knew who was in the band - if anyone - apart from the band itself. The 2010 gigs that went on sale, flights were booked by fans, then the whole thing puttered out to nothing. Then there were shows planned for last week that didn;t happen either. At no point until yesterday was there ever anything official as to who was or wasn't in the band. And it's still the case that there is no statement regarding the blessing, or not, that Clint, Richard, Fuzz & Adam have given to the new venture. The name appears to have been borrowed by the former singer for his solo project, without telling some - or any - of the band - that the name Pop Will Eat Itself is the name of the new band. It's not PWEI, but a new band, with an old name, playing cover versions of another bands songs. The analogy I've seen is a Blur reunion where people only find out Graham Coxon's the only member left, after they've bought tickets.
But apparently, I'm being "Anally retentive" in expecting PWEI to actually be the band that I've seen countless time, travelled thousands of miles, and followed for 25 years. Do not foet , these "anally retentive" people are those that listened to the music, hoped for gigs, bought the albums, bought the t-shirts, and slept on floors, took holidays, and made sacrifices for the songs, and these "anally retentive" people are the ones that are supposed to be buying the tickets, going to the shows, and spending the money to keep this new venture alive. What sticks is that it is not PWEI as we know it, nor the PWEI people will expect to see unless they are anally retentive enough to check the website.
I wish every member of the band - past and present including the new lineup - every success in this and the future, and I hope this new band are everything we hope for and nothing we fear. But they are not Pop Will Eat Itself. It doesn't matter what it says on the marquee or the ticket or the website - I saw the last PWEI show in London in January 2005 - and nothing can change that.
