Wow, guys. Do some reading, 2 great books on the subject were released in the last 2 months; Assimilate: a critical history of industrial music AND Ministry: The gospel acording to Al Jourgensen. I suggest the Ministry book; it's a quick read and extremely engaging. The short review; Al is fucked.

Anyways, it all really depends on how you classify Industrial music. After reading both books, I would say that the first proper Industrial album is probably Ministry's "Twitch".

No thanks, I'd prefer not to even have to listen to it, so reading a book on the subject isn't really something I'll be rushing to do.

"Industrial" is an extremely loose monicker. If you can use it to describe late PWEI, the chainsaw on sheet-metal of Einstürzende Neubauten, early monotonous dance-music like Front 242 and Throbbing Gristle it's useless. Grebo doesn't fit their later stuff either but it least it has a modicum of meaning and intent. In my opinion, "Industrial" is as loose and possibly less helpful than the generic "Rock" label.

What does that band/album/single sound like?

Well, kind of rock sounding but with an industrial influence.

At the end of the day pigeonholing music into catogories is a pretty subjective thing. To me the music in 96 was pretty industial. Even the look of the band, clint's welding goggles, the gas mask t-shirt and the way the guitars looked like a tin of black paint had been poured over them. The band just oozed an industial vibe about them.

I think one of the most interesting aspect of adam's notes is going to be how the band went their seperate way from graham. I mean if i have learnt anything over the last couple of years he was key to bands creative output. How did they let their talisman go?

But I still feel you can still use 'industrial' to describe certain tracks on DDMA. Especially so if you are not a fan of that type of music. Used in that context it implies a mix of styles, with a move from the sounds of the previous album, towards a more industrial sound. Rather than meaning a cock up at the factory means they accidentally put a Front 242 track on the album.
