Prior to their disbanding in 1996, a new look Pop Will Eat Itself, with Clint Mansell now the sole vocalist, wrote and recorded the bulk of what was to be a new album for release at some point that year. Informed by recent forays into America and involvement with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, the new material saw the band unwittingly lay down a blueprint for the arena filling industrial/electro crossover which was to dominate the latter half of the decade at the hands of Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Marilyn Manson, NIN and co, whilst retaining their own inimitable style; a sound laden with heavy riffs, choice samples, angry synthesisers, processed vocals and a collage of live and programmed drums. Sadly, though, the band would be pulled apart by forces beyond their control before the record's completion, and those recordings were destined to sit in the vaults for seventeen years… until now.
Sourced and compiled in collaboration with Adam Mole and Clint Mansell, 'A Lick Of The Old Cassette Box' compiles twelve of those tracks to finally produce that 'lost' album. A natural successor to 1994's 'Dos Dedos Mis Amigos' set, and featuring the 'should-have-been' single 'T+A=$', along with a handful of songs the band performed live during a final run of shows in 1996, '...Cassette Box' provides both a perfect bookend to the band's recorded career and a tantalising glimpse of what might have been.
A must for die-hards and any scholars of '90s British independent music, and pressed here on extremely limited orange vinyl, this is a surefire collector's item of the future, and sure to sell out very quickly.
